Institute of Ecology  


The Institute of Ecology and Marine Research was founded in 1989 and was integrated as the Institute of Ecology with the Tallinn University (TU) in 1997. It remains autonomous from the University and is primarily a research institute.

 

 

The main activities of the institute concern fundamental studies in the following research streams:  

 

The evaluation of  temporal-spatial impact of natural and anthropogenic processes on  ecosystems; the development of palaeoecological research methods; modelling of ecosystem development scenarios.

 

The influences of climate change and of the hydrodynamics of coastal sea on the development of  active coasts. Modelling of the coastal developments and prognosing changes in coastal zones.

 

The impact of disturbances on the structure, functioning and nutrient cycle of wetland ecosystems in different stages of their development. The development of research methods and scientific principles for ecological restoration of wetlands.

 

 

 

The institute is also involved in applied research in following topics:

 

 

Problematics  related to oil shale mining and to air contamination in North-East Estonia; research and scientific expertise of environmental conditions and nature conservation.
