Political Science and Governance

The study area views politics and governance as interdependent phenomena and affected by international, economic and social background. Such an integrative approach has informed our conception of teaching, and research and development activities.

We are active members of various international scientific associations – ECPR, EGPA, NISPAcee – and our research is internationally evaluated. The research activities of the study area are focused on politics and governance. In these fields we offer basic and applied research, developmental projects, consultations, analyses and trainings.

We have conducted research ordered by Estonian Government Office, Parliament, Ministries (such as Ministry of the Interior, of Education and Research, of Cultural Affairs, and of the Environment), as well as by numerous local governments and non-governmental organizations.

We coordinate the publication of a web based Estonian language peer reviewed journal Acta Politica Estica and in cooperation with Tallinn University’s Centre for International Social Studies the publication of an internationally highly ranked interdisciplinary scientific journal Studies of Transition States and Societies.

Political and socio-psychological determinants of inclusive integration context and their inter-dependencies

The main objective of this project is to study the interdependencies between political and socio-psychological determinants of inclusiveness of the migrant integration context.. The innovative contribution of the project is in studying the political and socio-psychological determinants as a unified research entity/object. While the project focuses on the integration of Russians in Estonia and Norway, it also includes a broader comparative perspective that seeks to understand more extensively the determinants of the inclusive integration context in other countries.

IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study

The purpose of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries. The study builds on the previous IEA study of civic education (CIVED) undertaken in 1999. It will report on student achievement on a test of conceptual understandings and competencies in civic and citizenship education. It will also collect and analyze data about student dispositions and attitudes relating to civic and citizenship education. Teacher and school questionnaires will gather information about teaching and class management practices, school governance and climate, and others.

States, citizens and transnationalisation

The research project focuses on the transformations in the opportunities and roles of citizens and nation state institutions due to transnationalisation and internationalisation. The project explores the trends of transnational transformations and its possible impacts on statehood, politics, governance and civic society. In particular, the focus is on the changes in citizenship practices and identities of transnational individuals, the civic society, but also the citizenship, migration, transnationalism and diaspora policies as well as their relationships to the transformation of sovereignty.
