Levels of Study

  • Applied higher education study is the level of higher education during which students acquire competences necessary for working in a particular profession or continuing their education in Master’s studies. Applied higher education study ends with final examinations or defence of a final thesis. The total capacity of applied higher education study is 180 ECTS credits (for the nominal period of three years).
  • Bachelor’s study is the first level of higher education during which students enhance their general education knowledge, obtain basic knowledge and skills in their area of specialisation and knowledge and skills necessary for commencing work or continuing their education in Master’s studies. Bachelor’s study ends with a Bachelor’s examination or defence of a Bachelor’s thesis. The total capacity of Bachelor’s study is 180 ECTS credits (for the nominal period of three years).
  • Master’s study is the second level of higher education during which students enhance their specialised knowledge and skills and obtain knowledge and skills necessary for independent work or continuing their education in Doctoral studies. Students can apply for Master’s study programme only after they have obtained the first level of higher education. Master’s study ends with a Master’s examination or defence of a Master’s thesis. The total capacity of Master’s study is 60–120 ECTS credits (nominal period of one or two years).
  • Combination of Bachelor’s / Master’s study takes place on the basis of an integrated Bachelor’s/ Master’s curricula studies and amounts to 300 ECTS credits (for the nominal period of five years). Study ends with a Master’s examination or defence of a Master’s thesis.
  • Doctoral study is the highest level of higher education during which students obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for independent research, development or vocational creative work. Doctoral study ends with defence of a Doctoral thesis. The total capacity of Doctoral study is 180–240 ECTS credits (nominal period of three or four years).
