International Relations Around The World

  • Spring semester starts on 17th of February and lasts until 5th of May 
  • There will be information hour on 17th of february about the courses, what is needed to finish the courses and other neccesary information regarding the semester.
  • Graduation ceremony for spring semester will be at 19th of May 2018.

This course gives the students a possibility to get to know the basics of social sciences and in particular - the theoretical and practical issues of the international relations. The course below includes the European topics as well as wider issues and countries all over the world. The overall goal is – to widen the comprehension of the world and its controversies.

A student who has finished the course knows European countries and the world biggest players and their (sometimes contradictory) relations; knows the basics in international relations’ and security studies’ theories and empirics as well as social sciences in principle.

1. Study Day: Estonia and the Baltic sea neighbours

Overview of the course and technical details. Estonian foreign policy – what is that and how is it made? Who are our friends and what are our possibilities in the world affairs? Overview of the activities of our neighbors – what are they doing in international politics? Cooperation and the future. Future of Estonia in Europe and in the world.

2. Study Day: Security of Baltic States and Nordic Countries

Baltic states and their security. Nordic countries and their security. Baltic-Nordic cooperation in the sphere of security.

Short paper of own ideas: what does foreign and security policy mean for you? Where and how do you see foreign and security policy in your everyday life? Ca 3 pages.

3. Study Day: World Security Guarantees – A State or An International Organization? The USA, NATO or Anything Else?

Domestic and foreign policies of the USA. The Goals and activities of the USA in the world. Foundation and developments of NATO. Role of NATO in current world affairs. Other international security guarantees.

4. Study Day: Multifaceted Asia: Arabic Asia, Central Asia, South-East Asia

Time: March 31, 2018

Multifaceted Asia: Arab countries, Central Asian and South East Asian states. Overview of the regions. Regional differences. Role and influences of Russia, USA, China in the regions. Asia – future world power?

Foreign Policy of A Country. Chose one of the countries discussed in the class and give an overview of the foreign and security policy of the country in the 21st century. Give all the references of the sources (books, articles) you have used.  Ca 3 pages. 

5. Study Day: Russia – Current Strategies and Activities in the World

Time: April 1

Domestic and foreign policy of Russia. Basic foreign policy documents and goals of activities in the world. Russia and CIS Russia in Syria. Russia and the USA relations. Russia and Europe. Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

Comparison-paper: which of the following countries is the most important security guarantee  for Estonia  - the USA, Russia (one of the Nordic countries) and why? Explain. Ca 3 pages. 

Cost: 25 euros

Registration has ended.

Bill for the course will be sent during one month from the beginning of the course. If participants want to unsubscribe from the course they have to let know about it by e-mail to the project manager (Teele.Ilvest....at....tlu.ee) by February 23rd the latest. If they announce it later the bill will be sent and has to be paid regardless of them not participating.

Participants who attend on at least 4 days and submit all assignments duly will be given a certificate and an academic transcript. Participants who attend on at least 3 days and submit all assignments duly will be given a confirmation.
