With restoration of mires we can get more areas with recreational value
The abundance of mire hikers has already become an important factor disrupting life in mires. By restoring the naturalness of mires, we can create recreational opportunities for people as well as habitats for plants and animals.
Going to mires is popular nowadays. Hiking and foraging experiences in mires is a grow- ing trend in many countries, including Esto- nia. e positive image of mires, especially bogs, is used to advertise or promote all sorts of products or events. In 2017, as President of the European Union, Estonia introduced itself as a country of mires – the conference halls were then decorated with beautiful views of the winter bog.
e Estonian people have become ’believers of mires’ – for a survey of one hundred objects characterizing Estonia (on the 100th anniver- sary of the Republic of Estonia in 2018), Esto- nians chose rst the bog above our traditional song festivals, forests and world-famous com- poser Arvo Pärt. is con rms our continued and ever-increasing desire to go to mires.
