COOPERATION BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES
AND BUSINESSES through inter-faculty learning
Associate Professor Katri-Liis Lepik of Tallinn University Institute of Social Sciences is exploring along with an international team a valued COST project on how to define what should be taught at the universities in the future and how to deal with a wide range of societal challenges.
In an increasingly complex and changing world, traditional sectoral solutions no longer lead to the desired positive social and economic changes.
According to Katri-Liis Lepik, it is important to debate in the field
of education about the skills
we help shape in order to
cope in future jobs, such as creativity, persistence, problem solving.
"Collaboration be-
tween universities and
businesses is becoming
increasingly important
for using innovation,
creating jobs and sharing knowledge," Lepik asserts. "Interdisciplinary learning and coaching are thus becoming increas- ingly necessary skills."
Innovation lab
The SHIINE project "Interdisciplinary innova- tion for societal change"’ involves 39 countries and is growing even more. In addition to universities, social entrepreneurs and policy makers are involved.
During the project, a virtual public sector in- novation laboratory will be established, which is meant for universities and as a tool for the public and private sectors. The lab describes various problems that are being solved with the countries in the network. It includes, for
partners that deal with the problems and docu- ments that regulate the field.
Researchers also use a variety of in- novation methods (living labs
and design thinking tools) in collaboration with busi-
nesses and policy makers that directly address the
needs of their users and problem owners
in providing solutions. Through the innova-
tion lab, all activities reach the wider public.
Tallinn University's lecturers, researchers and doctoral students can apply
for project trainings, research missions and conferences. Also
join the SHIINE workgroups.
This is the second COST network project led by Tallinn University and an Estonian researcher.
SHIINE "Multi-disciplinary Innovation for Social Change" is a project of the European intergovernmental network COST. Its financial volume is €0.7 million. Project will run from 2019 to 2023 Conductor: Associate Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences Katri-Liis Lepik.
Lecturer Audrone Urmanaviciene and PhD student Kadri Kangro are also involved as members of the leading group and associate professors Zsolt Bugarszki and Mari-Liis Jakob- son are alternate members from Tallinn University.
