Reedel, 8. oktoobril kell 9.00 on ökoloogia keskuse teadusseminaril rääkimas Northern Illinois University kaasprofessor Nathan D. Stansell. Seminaril räägitakse Peruu Andide viimasest liustikutsüklist.

Seminarist lähemalt:

Peru is home to the majority of tropical glaciers in the world. However, the last glacial cycle in the Peruvian Andes is not well understood due to discontinuity in records of glacial variability and conflicting information from other paleoclimate archives. We broadly know that a local Last Glacial Maximum (LLGM) lasted from ~32 to 20 ka and was followed by a highly variable glacial history during the Late Glacial Stage and Holocene. Yet tropical glacial variability during the last glacial cycle needs to be better resolved in order to understand the degree to which low latitude temperature variability and the hydrologic cycle played a role in modulating abrupt climate change events in both the low and high latitudes. Understanding what caused the spin-up to peak glacial activity to vary on regional to continental-scales is important for our knowledge of global climate dynamics, and specifically, the role of the tropical hydrologic cycle in modulating synoptic-scale cooling and warming events.

Recent studies have illustrated both the exciting potential for cosmogenic dating of moraine boulders to elucidate global climate dynamics, and also the limitations of inherently discontinuous moraine records for discerning the relative scale of local and global forcing on glacier changes. Here, lake sediment records fill a critical void in dating uncertainties because they provide continuous records of glacial and climate variability that can be compared to and combined with dated moraine positions that mark former ice limits. Detailed inverse modeling studies that integrate these records further help to resolve the climate forcings responsible for alpine glaciation during these key intervals. These new high-resolution records raise a number of critical questions, including what drove the pattern of late Quaternary tropical climate variability, and how did these forcings relate to the timing of Northern and Southern Hemisphere ice dynamics?
