The main aim of the KiNESIS project is to create a Knowledge Alliance among academia, NGOs, communities, local authorities, businesses to develop a program of multidisciplinary activities in shrinking areas with the aim of promoting and fostering ideas, projects, workforce, productivity and attractiveness. The focus of KiNESIS is to converge the interest of different stakeholders by recalling various skills around abandoned villages to make them "smart" and "attractive".

The KINESIS Knowledge alliance addresses the topic of international cooperation focused on shrinking areas since it creates an international living lab to exchange best practices. The project aims at fostering social dialogue between different stakeholders (academia, businesses, local bodies, citizens, NGOs) as one of the key elements to revitalise shrinking and marginalised areas.

Keeping in mind the triangular objectives of cooperation and innovation of research, higher education and business of the Knowledge Alliance action, the KiNESIS project aims are: 1) revitalising depopulated areas by stimulating entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills; 2) creating local living laboratories, shared at European level, in which the exchange of knowledge, best practices, experiences can help promote social inclusion and entrepreneurial development; 3) experimenting new, innovative and multidisciplinary approaches in teaching and learning; 4) facilitating the exchange, flow and co-creation of knowledge at a local and global level.

TLU  team will contribute to the success of the project by:
-providing mentorship for the students for their social business projects development;
-organizing the events (workshop, conferences) in shrinking areas in order to help these communities to promote social innovations in rural areas;
-sharing expertise and knowledge about Living Labs and social hackathons organization with other project partners;
-helping to organize the different phases of the project;
-Organizing social entrepreneurship summer school in order to develop students problem-solving skills and social entrepreneurship skills.

TLU  together with other project partners will organize innovative internships and research places for students, with a view to promoting the development of shrinking territories. Project partners will organise and supervise innovative, adventurous but safe internships for students which contributes to new educational methods;
Tallinn University’s students will have the opportunity to work and research cultural, economic and social problems in rural shrinking areas. They will be invited to the 3-6 months internships in local organizations in shrinking areas in Italy, Netherlands and Spain. Students will enrol in internships to work with local community problems and  develop skills,  methods for their future careers. The internships will be relevant for the student’s degree-related learning and personal development needs and will be integrated in his/her study programme. After the internship/research period students will deliver a final report. These final reports are necessary for KiNESIS and the community to make decisions on the strategy of the programme but also for the future of the shrinking area.

TLU will cooperate with the Development Centre of Võru County (Võrumaa arenduskeskus) in Estonia and will provide opportunities to accept international students from all the partner countries of the KINESIS project for internships. International students will meet with the local community and carry out their internships in local hosting organizations. The internship plan is based on the identification of the main needs of the hosting community and the matching of these needs with the students’ profiles needed to carry out research/tasks for the provision of concrete solutions to the community.  TLU will help international students with a smooth integration process into the local community. Students will carry out their assignments and will produce tangible results, such as reports on specific topics used for advising the community and concrete outputs.
