ASSIGNMENT: 10 Questions about Leadership

Group Work

Group work is one pedagogical strategy that promotes participation and interaction. It also fosters a deeper and more active learning process. In addition to exposing students to different approaches and ways of thinking, working with other students in groups can promote a sense of belonging that combats the anonymity and isolation that many students experience at a large campus. Working together in groups also gives students the opportunity to learn from and teach each other. Classroom research has shown that students often learn better from each other than they do from a teacher (Barkley et al. 2005, pp.16-20).

Think-Pair-Share Technique

1. Think about 30 minutes about the following questions (make notes):

  • What is your definition of leadership?
  • List the three most important qualities necessary for leadership
  • Which values do you think are most important in a leader? Why are they important?
  • Can you identify any effective leaders who do not have those values?
  • Which values do they exhibit? What makes them effective?
  • What is the major barrier to being a leader?
  • Are there personal and/or professional costs to being a leader? If so, explain
  • Leadership: nature, nurture or both? Can it be learned?
  • Has a particular book or person influenced your leadership style?

2. Please provide a story of an instance when you demonstrated leadership.

3. Pair with another student and discuss your responses to the question during 30 minutes. Share your responses with the whole study group via discussion forum.

4. Continue reflection in the discussions forum "10 Questions about Leadership" in the Learning Management System or selected social software platform.

5. Compare your answers with the answers in the material "10 Questions about Leadership" http://wichita.kumc.edu/fcm/documents/Ten%20questions%20about%20Leadership.pdf
