Introduction

Written texts of leadership emerged early. Leadership concepts have been developed and retained in texts through history.

  • Egyptians used hieroglyphs leadership, leader and follower in their written texts 5000 years ago
  • Chinese classics’s texts, written in 6th century B.E.C., filled with horatory advice to leaders
  • The Greeks’ concepts of leadership were exemplified by the heroes in Homer’s Iliad
  • Greek philosopher Plato, in his Republic, looked at the requirements for the ideal leader and offered three types of leadership
  • A famous Reneissance work was Machiawelli’s The Prince (1513)
  • At th 19-th century German philosopher Hegel touched leadership in his Philosophy of Mind (1830)

The Bass Handbook of Leadership is one of the basic books on the field. It has four editions, and the last edition is completely revised and updated.

Typologies of ledership were updated with the developing leadership theories. Since the first leadership classifications, differnt types of leaders have been studied. There are studies of leadership styles in small groups and in organizations. Leaders have been described according to their functions, roles, perceptions and behaviors. All these studies have output in written texts – monographs, textbooks, articles.
Nowadays researchers and practitioners continue their work on leadership. Every year is published a number of documents.
It is great task to orientate in this amount of information, and find relevant material to for study and research.
