Statement of the Board of the Board of NGO POLIS to Support the Liberty of Ukraine

NGO Polis supports the freedom of the Ukrainian people and state to organise their own life. We endorse the standpoint of all democratic states and organisations that the aggression in Ukraine should be immediately ended and diplomatic solutions should be sought. We also suggest that the aggressors should meet all expenses brought by the war.

We consider the “Statement of the Riigikogu on the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine” to be most important, especially the assessment that: „The Riigikogu condemns the violation of the fundamental principles of the United Nations by the Russian Federation. Using threat of force the Russian Federation is brutally violating the sovereignty of Ukraine, and by using force, undermining its territorial integrity. The Riigikogu condemns the activities of the Russian Federation that are in breach of all the principles of international relations established by the Helsinki Final Act of 1975.”

Estonia’s historic experience, including liberation from totalitarian power and rebuilding free society, is a good example of taking into account of the free will of people. Based on our experience, we can say that a democratic statehood begins from the grass-root level, from civic associations and the strength of local authorities. We call on the representatives of Estonian state and local and educational institutions, civic associations as well as private citizens to publicly support to the right of freedom and sovereignty of the Ukrainian state and people and to denounce the aggression against them.

In this crisis, it is of utmost importance for the state institutions, and in the society in general, to focus on securing and development of statehood according to the rule of law. A good example has been set by the Riigikogu on February 23, by adopting the abovementioned Statement.
Freedom is a unique value, the loss of which is felt most sorely by nations who are deprived of it. Let us keep the world a place where international justice applies to all nations and countries. We consider it relevant that all countries valuing democracy and freedom stand by free Ukraine and support its independence.

Long Live Ukraine!

Слава Україні!
