GLOBALIZATION OF INFORMATION: THE NETWORKING INFORMATION SOCIETY

Abstract

48th Conference and Congress "Globalization of Information: The Networking Information Society" of the International Federation for Information and Documentation  (FID) took place in Graz, Austria  on 20 - 25 October in 1996 closing the 100th Anniversary and celebrating thousand years of beautiful Austria.

"Globalization of Information: The Networking Information Society" was the main theme for the conference. By choosing this topic FID wished to shed light on the different aspects in our networking Society.

The Conference was of interest to a very large audience - to information professionals from all sectors of the information, knowledge and communication area as well as information users from all sectors of Society, because networks affect all levels of our Society.

The programme included many themes and subjects which are the key elements in entering the Information Society: networking and access, information superhighways and infrastructures, knowledge-based generation, quality issues, information science, intellectual property, lifelong learning and distance education, integrity, the consequences on business and industry, the impact on the information professionals, etc.

Pre-Congress Seminars that took place in the framework of the Congress and Conference were the following:

20 - 21 October "Working and Learning in a Networked Electronic Environment" organized by FID Education and Training Committee;    (Photo)

21 October "Globalization of Financial Information" organized by the FID Banking, Finance and Insurance Special Interest Group and SLA European Chapter;

22 October  "Multimedia Development in Europe: The EU Programme Info2000".

Sirje Virkus took part in the Conference and Congress and presented paper "Distance Learning in a Networked Environment" in the pre-conference seminar "Working and Learning in a Networked Environment".

The article gives a short overview of the contents and presentations of the 48th Conference and Congress and pre-congress seminars.
