e extraction of peat will leave a residual peat eld – brown peat bog. Here on the le is a pine stump about 30 cm high, which was le in the peat eld in Viru bog in northern Estonia. e stumps remained hidden in the peat layer that was le in the eld. In 40 years, the stump has ’grown out’ of the peat, which means that a 30 cm thick layer of peat has disappeared around the stump. In the right photo, there is an abandoned peat eld. A er decades only one plant species – tussock cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum) – has started to grow; there is a loose, cracked surface between the plants. As such, it will remain for decades until erosion and aerobic decomposition destroy all the peat.
