Virtual Learning Environments

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are also referred to as Learning Management Systems (LMS), Course Management Software, digital learning environments (DLEs) and online learning environments.

Akeroyd (2005) explains that the term VLE has been mainly used in the UK, while LMS is used in the USA. Akeroyd (2005) and Ekmekçioglu and Brown (2001) refer to the concept of Managed Learning Environments (MLEs) as VLEs that include other features for institutional management such as student record keeping, bursary, schedules, etc. (Virkus et al, 2009).

VLEs are defined as systems designed to enable the learning interactions or tools that enable the integration of web-based materials in the virtual classroom. Cohen (2001) highlights capabilities of the VLEs in three areas:

  • the aggregation of content displayed in designed interfaces,
  • the integration of communication and collaboration tools and
  • the assistance in course management.

MacColl (2001) indicates that VLEs began to appear in the second half of the 1990s, not necessarily being web-based (Virkus et al, 2009).
