“Climate change is not only a topic related to climate, but is also a cultural problem.”
Requests need to be acknowledged
The project and the research connected to it is not important only in science. What is taking place needs to be understood and seen from the wider perspective of the audience as well. “The same methods and data are used to make money, for the benefit of people and political influence,” explains Schich. “This is why we need a better understanding as a society and we need to be able to acknowledge what we want and do not want.”
Schich thinks that having data as such does not have to mean loss of privacy. “Privacy is a social standard whereby we do not peek into one another’s bedrooms,” the professor notes.
We do not benefit from trying to hide data
and ourselves from one another, but lose. “By refusing to communicate with one another and isolating ourselves, we only act for the benefit of very few people,” he says. This brings tragedy from the viewpoint of many. “Without interac- tion, there is no life; life needs communication,” emphasises Schich.
Fears that are magnified in the echo chambers of like-minded people need to be reduced. “We will show them that there are several other bubbles or echo chambers where they can feel good,” says Schich. “We will show them that the content of their echo chamber is often influ- enced by things that they are unaware of. “I do not claim that it would be easy but I think that this is where it should start from.”
The ERA Chair project “Cultural data analytics” (CUDAN) takes place from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2023. Funded by the European Commission with 2.5 million euros. Principal Investigator: Professor of Media Innovation at TLUBFM Indrek Ibrus. The purpose of project CUDAN is to create a new approach to the analysis of cultural data that would connect quantitative and qualitative methods. Three units from the university, BFM, School of Humanities and School of Digital Technologies, are working towards the success of the project.
