Factors Influencing Knowledge Sharing

Several studies have been carried out to determine the factors that influence knowledge sharing. For example, Ives, Torrey and Gordon (2003) describe knowledge sharing as a human behavior that should be examined in the context of human performance. Human performance is described as a complex activity that is influenced by many factors.

They describe a human performance model which includes

  • business context,
  • organizational factors and
  • individual factors (as cited in Wabwezi, 2011, p.17).

Organizational performance factors include:

  • structure,
  • roles,
  • processes,
  • physical environment,
  • and culture (as cited in Wabwezi, 2011, p.17).

They assert that the individual factors include direction, measurements, means, ability and motivation. These factors are interrelated and each contributes to the success of KS but can only be effective if considered collectively (as cited in Wabwezi, 2011, p.17).
