Cloud opera

The research project deals with the search for poetics in new technologies - including both augmented and virtual reality. The object of research is the poetic use of new realities and historical parallels, which have the potential to open new artistic perspectives in the technical landscape. As part of the project's theoretical research, the historical comparison of media is dealt with, and in a practical, creative project, new technologies are tested in the "Cloud Opera" performed at Vabal Lava, which is a step to the next larger creative project. In the theoretical part, the questions that arose during the creative project are also dealt with.

Evolution of digital audio-visual heritage metadata systems: Effects on heritage-based innovation and cultural memory curation by creative industries

Evolution of digital audio-visual heritage metadata systems: Effects on heritage-based innovation and cultural memory curation by creative industries

01.01.2016-31.12.2019
Responsible executor: Indrek Ibrus

The project investigates the cultural and socio-economic impacts of mass digitization initiatives of audiovisual (AV) cultural heritage starting in Europe. Based on an analytical approach that combines the analysis of cultural dynamics (using mainly cultural semiotics and "media archeology" approaches) and techno-economic innovation studies (evolutionary economics, political-economic media studies), we aim to explore the interdependencies between various related developments: how AV heritage metadata standards in the field develop in the mutual influence of institutions; how they participate in the curation of cultural memory and how creative industries and educational institutions reach innovative forms of learning based on AV heritage. The empirical study includes an international study of metadata standardization, creation and use in education; we also develop a new method to analyze how metadata protocols model culture and curate cultural memory.

Post-Soviet Neoliberalism in Contemporary Estonian Cinema

Post-Soviet Neoliberalism in Contemporary Estonian Cinema

01.01.2018-31.12.2019

Teet Teinemaa

Neoliberalism, marking substantial social changes over the last half a century in the West, has received relatively little attention in film studies, especially regarding cinematic representations of society. This is particularly so concerning Estonian cinema, which is highly problematic given the important role that neoliberal ideas have had in Estonia since 1992. The current academic attention in film studies is predominantly Marxist criticism. This is problematic, considering that Estonia’s Soviet past has rendered Marxism an unattractive alternative for many filmmakers. The project aims to add to the current academic writing by analysing neoliberalism in the chosen films, both in terms of representation and production/financing, from a wider theoretical background. The project will provide significant academic insight into several of the most important contemporary Estonian films and add to the scholarly understanding of the most important social transformation of recent times.

Courses for journalists from developing countries

Courses for journalists from developing countries

2014-2019
Responsible executor: Katrin Saks

The goal of the project is to organize 5-6 day study visits to Estonia for journalists from developing countries, which would include both media training and an opportunity to get to know different aspects of Estonian life. Media training covers topics such as media freedom and economy, regulation and self-regulation in a democratic society, media production for new platforms, etc. Broadcasting organizations and various publications are visited and journalists are introduced. The second block is about the relationship between power and the media, the Riigikogu, the government and some KOVs are visited. The third day is dedicated to digital technological solutions promoting media, society and democracy. The fourth block is designed according to the interests of a specific group to explore some area in more detail (tourism, business, export, culture, environment, etc.) and includes a shorter or longer trip outside the capital.
