KUM6144
The Basic of Improvisation I

09.–13.04.2012, 2 EAP, formative assessment, pass or fail assessment

Course aims: Expand the students’ possibilities of expression on different instruments or vocally. Give an introduce to the principles and possibilities of jazz/pop and contemporary music improvisation.

Brief description: The course is conducted with two internationally renown guest professors. The students explore the chord symbols used in jazz/pop- music, different structures of pitch organization, timbral components, rhythmic, typical vocabulary, sources of inspiration as well as playing and conducting techniques. Participants start to apply basic improvisational methods and skills practically. Self-contained independent work means: study of theoretical basics, creation of paraphrased improvisations and their rehearsal for a public performance. Improvisations will be realized solo and in small groups. In special focus are differences in form, pitch structure, tone and playing techniques of jazz/pop and contemporary music as well as conducting of contemporary music group improvisation.

Learning outcome: Development of understanding of basic principles/techiques/possibilities of jazz/pop and contemporary music improvisation in theory and practice as well as the knowledge of most typical harmony and form principles in free jazz/pop and contemporary music improvisation in solo and group performance.
