December 2024: Ubiquitous Movement Sensing

Name of the course: Ubiquitous Movement Sensing

Physical learning week in Tallinn University: December 16 - 20, 2024

Workload: 3 ECTS.

Target group: Students (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) coming from all disciplines, with a particular interest in any of the following domains: Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Biomedical Engineering, Dance, Choreography, Kinesiology, Architecture.

Total duration: from November 27 until December 20.

Course description

The course will provide an overview of body sensing approaches through activity tracking, using embodied motion sensing supported by movement theory. A set of hackable hardware and software tools will be presented to the students, following speculation upon ubiquitous sensing applications, integrating sensors into clothing (wearables) and everyday objects (movables). From the frame of movement qualities, we consider ways to monitor behaviour in a variety of situations and environments, evaluating the potential of being used in public spaces and operating outdoors. We will conclude with a prototyping workshop, allowing students to explore and implement new systems relevant to their own design criteria.

Following a series of instructional seminars and task-based activities around the topic of movement data, participants will lead a research enquiry that explores how such data can be captured in various scenarios and environments, including public spaces.

Online sessions

Dates: November 27th, December 4th and 11th

The virtual training will take part before the physical. This will focus on some technical preparations that will facilitate the physical activities. Using free software, participants will learn to use mobile phones to record movement and geolocation data from the built-in sensors.

In-person sessions in Tallinn University, Estonia

Dates: December 16 - 20, 2024

Activities: Seminars and activities focusing on movement qualities, movement sensing hardware and data communication protocols, fabrication strategies, real-time interaction, data contextualisation and visualization strategies, auto-ethnographic design, and storytelling with data.

Goals:

  • Ability to contextualize sensory data by applying principles of movement qualities;
  • Combining multiple data sources to visualize and develop intriguing narratives around movement data.

Expected Results: A set of group presentations (“data showcases”) followed by feedback and reflection.

Learning outcomes

  • Familiarization with wearable sensor devices and data transmission protocols.
  • Exposure to data visualization strategies and multimodal data analysis.
  • Ability to contextualize sensor data by applying principles of movement qualities.

Funding for students

Students can apply for the Erasmus grant offered by their home university. During the physical learning week the organizers will cover coffee breaks, snacks and some of the food expenses, as well as a diverse cultural programme. Accommodation and some of the food costs the students must cover themselves. No additional payments will be asked from the university's side.

Contacts

The course will be led by Research Fellow William Ruddock Primett and Associate Professor Vladimir Tomberg.

June 2024: Learning Experience Design - in Higher Education

Tallinn University, Cyprus University of Technology, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Universidade Lusófona and Comenius University in Bratislava invite PhD and MSc students as well as educational professionals (e.g. higher education lecturers, instructional designers, eLearning developers, educational researchers) from foreign universities to participate in our BIP-course, the physical part of which takes place in Tallinn from June 10 to 14, 2024.

Course description

The BIP-course starts on May 13, 2024 with a virtual part, continues with the physical part during 5 days in Tallinn, the mesmerizing capital of Estonia, and concludes with one more virtual learning week in June to sum up the experience. Upon completing the programme, the students will receive 4 ECTS credits.

Name of the course: Learning Experience Design - in Higher Education (4 ECTS)
Target group: PhD, MSc students and Higher education staff
The course focuses on five main topics:

  • Foundations of Learning Experience Design (LED).
  • LED in practice.
  • Plan and Prototype the LED journey.
  • Evaluation and iteration in LED.
  • Future Trends in LED

The course intends to help students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for designing an effective and efficient learner-centered instructional designer strategy to facilitate both distance and in person education practices. The aim is to plan, prototype and evaluate the LED journey.

The course will have an intensive blended format of six weeks. During the first 3 weeks we will be engaged in distance training including mentoring sessions, reading the training resources and sprint preparation for the physical week. During the physical week the training team will meet and work face-to-face at Tallinn University in Estonia. After the physical week online recap meetings are planned.

In teams the students will plan and prepare a learning experience journey and evaluate it with potential students to ensure that the proposed learner-centered instructional designer strategy is effective and efficient to reach the proposed learning objective.

Funding for students

Students can apply for the Erasmus grant offered by their home university. Tallinn University will cover much of the food but the accommodation and some of the food costs the students must cover themselves. No additional payments will be asked from the university's side.

Travelling

Students from different European universities will travel to Tallinn on Sunday 9th June 2024, enjoy 5 days of face-to-face lessons, activities and exchange, and return on Friday, 14th or Saturday, 15th. The travel days can be different for students who wish to spend more time in Estonia. At the university, there will be some afternoon events, including an excursion in Tallinn old town. These events will be free for all participants and some include snacks or food.

Practical information

Deadline for students to register: April 1, 2024.
