The master's program Community Work in an Aging Society fills a critical gap in higher education and the expansion of Estonian research and development, considering that Estonia is one of the fastest-aging countries in the world. At the same time, aging theories and practices have shifted towards a more dynamic, awareness-based, and preventive approach.

Research results indicate that the only viable solution to the challenges faced by aging societies is harnessing the potential of older people. In a professionally managed community, aging can help optimize future healthcare and social welfare costs by ensuring good social health for individuals.

The aim of the program is to provide broad theoretical knowledge for the evidence-based development of healthy aging and age-friendly environments in communities, as well as to equip students with professional skills for the ethical inclusion of older adults. Upon completing the program, graduates will have the opportunity to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

Who are we expecting?

This program is designed for individuals who are passionate about this field, want to take the lead, and aim to influence the development of an aging society with their acquired knowledge. It is suitable for professionals in the public, private, and third sectors. You are welcome to join if you work, for example, in local government in the field of social work, as a personnel and development specialist in a company, as a manager or coordinator in a care facility, or as an adult educator. These are just a few examples. The program is also an excellent choice for graduates of the Health Promotion and Handicraft Technology and Design curricula at our college, as well as for bachelor's graduates in social work, youth work, public administration, business management, recreation, and related fields from various universities.

Why Study at Tallinn University Haapsalu College?

Join us and become a creator of professional aging-friendly environments! In Estonia, a quarter of a million people—20% of the population—are of retirement age, and in a few decades, this number will rise to 30%. Graduates of this program will contribute to developing environments that support well-being, ensuring that individuals can maintain and enhance their functional abilities throughout life, enabling them to do what they personally find valuable at every stage of life.

Healthy aging is a collaborative effort!

Estonian social policy and practice follow the principle of ageing in place, allowing individuals to live in their own homes for as long as possible. However, beyond managing daily life at home, people also need social connections, a sense of belonging and purpose, and a strong community (ageing in community). While social services often focus on addressing problems and see individuals primarily as recipients of aid, community belonging helps prevent issues before they arise, recognizing and utilizing each person's strengths and capabilities.

Join us in bringing generations together and unlocking their full potential!
