CEEShub (Central and Eastern European Security Hub) is a research center at Tallinn University, with the aim to increase the capacity for evidence-informed policymaking in the field of security by taking advantage of the perspectives of Central and Eastern European countries. The hub is financed by the EU Horizon fund and, under the leadership of Tallinn University (with the help of Tampere University and University of Copenhagen), will organize events involving researchers, practitioners and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Why are we doing this?

For decades, war and security have been studied through the political traditions of the great powers and the West.  Research to date has focused heavily on military security.  Although such approaches have been necessary in the past and helped policymakers and heads of state to make decisions, more recent studies show that a comprehensive approach is needed to ensure peace and security. To design a viable security architecture, the perspectives of regional actors, ‘bottom-up’ approaches and human security (economic, social, and environmental) must be considered.

Main goals of the hub?
  • Bring together diversely positioned actors and unfold the CEE perspective on security and peace through both fostering collaborative work and the sharing of knowledge.
  • Conduct participatory research at an international level and offer policymakers evidence-informed input to create policies and strategies.
  • Contribute to the creation of a peaceful Europe and a viable European Security architecture through an evidence-based, reflective and collaborative approach to security.
How do we achieve these goals?
  • We are organizing workshops and working in tandem with policymakers and civil society actors.
  • We organize multiple forums to exchange ideas, such as international conferences, summer schools, collaborative workshops, and research exchanges.

The hub is financed by the EU Horizon fund and, under the leadership of Tallinn University (co-directed by Dr Birgit Poopuu and Dr Benjamin Klasche) with the help of Tampere University and University of Copenhagen. In the context of the project we will organize events involving researchers, practitioners and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
