The Institute of Informatics was formed in 2001 as a result of splitting of Department of Mathematics and informatics. The institute has its own R&D unit - Centre for Educational Technology. The researchers and lecturers of the institute take actively part in international and national R&D programs and projects; there are cooperation agreements with academic institutions from about twenty countries. The centre of educational technology is the main developer of educational software in Estonia and a member of Nordic Centre for Research on Learning and Media.
The institute offers an international Master level program "Interactive Media and Knowledge Environments" (IMKE).
