The Institute of Informatics was formed in 2001, as an independent unit after the ...  of former Department of Mathematics and informatics. The institute has its own R&D unit - Centre for Educational Technology. The researchers and lecturers of the institute take actively part in international and national R&D programs and projects; there are cooperation agreements with academic institutions from about twenty countries. The centre of educational technology is the main developer of educational software in Estonia and a member of Nordic Centre for Research on Learning and Media.

The institute offers an international Master level program "Interactive Media and Knowledge Environments" (IMKE) and Doctoral level program "Information Society Technologies"
