Language Ideologies in Ukraine: From State Policies to Family Language Management

The lecture will cover the pre-Soviet and Soviet periods, the early years of Ukraine’s independence, and the changes that followed 2004, 2014, and 2022. It will also explore how these historical and political developments have influenced people’s attitudes towards languages.

In addition, the lecture will examine how language ideologies operate in schools, public spaces, and the media, as well as how they are reflected in families’ and individuals’ everyday language practices.

Drawing on language-biography research, Oleksandr Stukalo will present the experiences of two Ukrainian families living in the Czech Republic. The families participated in his PhD research, and their stories illustrate how broader social ideologies influence personal language choices and family language management.
