Tiit Land Elected as the New Rector for Tallinn University

On Monday, February 14, the TU electoral body elected Tiit Land as the new
rector of Tallinn Universty for a five-year term. His term of office will
commence on May 15, 2011.Of the 107 members of the TU electoral body, 97
members participated in the elections. The electoral body included all the
members of Tallinn University Senate, elected professors and leading
researchers of the university, members of the the Board of Governors of
Tallinn University and the representatives of students selected by the
council of the student body. The elections were held by secret ballot. Each
member of the electoral body was allotted one individual vote and could
vote for only one candidate.Rector Rein Raud said, "I am very pleased that
the new rector for our university is an internationally acclaimed
scientist. His priorities are stability and quality and he has emphasised
the need for more increased cooperation with other universities. I hope
this will be productive and useful in the development of our common
cause."Tiit Land is Professor of Chemisty at Tallinn University and
Director of Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences. He defended his doctoral thesis at Stockholm University in the
field of neurochemistry and neurotoxicology. He is a former Vice Dean of
Academic Affairs at Stockholm University and has had extensive
administrative experience. His research is primarily involved with
molecular mechanisms in iron metabolism and inflammatory processes and
their role in neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer's disease. He has
published numerous scientific articles in international peer-reviewed
publications and has successfully supervised doctoral students. He is an
active participant in the administration and popularisation of science.The
current term of office of the present rector, Professor Rein Raud,
terminates on May 14, 2011.
