Human Rights and Elections. The Importance of International Election Observation

This lecture will dive into the relationship between human rights and democratic elections, highlighting the fundamental role of free, fair, and inclusive electoral processes. It will analyse the international legal standards governing electoral rights and their connection with the protection of fundamental freedoms. Particular attention will be devoted to international election observation as a mechanism for assessing compliance with democratic and human rights standards. Finally, it will consider their contribution to electoral integrity, accountability, and the strengthening of democratic governance and human rights protection, giving some examples of this outstanding action.
