The second screening of SuperNova’s autumn season is the Spanish film Even the Rain (También la lluvia, dir. Icíar Bollaín, 2010).

Cochabamba, Bolivia, 2000. Sebastián (Gael García Bernal) and Costa (Luis Tosar) set out to make a film about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. Director Sebastián wants to debunk the myth of Columbus, portraying him as an ambitious and unscrupulous man. Producer Costa, meanwhile, is primarily concerned with keeping the film within their modest budget. That is why he chooses Bolivia, one of the cheapest countries in Latin America and home to one of the region’s largest Indigenous populations.

The film is being shot in Cochabamba, where the privatisation and sale of the city’s water supply to a multinational corporation sparks growing unrest among the local population. The tensions eventually erupt into the infamous Bolivian Water War in April 2000.

The film is in Spanish and Galician with English subtitles. The screening is supported by the Embassy of Spain in Estonia.
