Add to calendar
iCal calendarWe have extended the deadline for abstract submissions to 10 November 2026, so that everyone interested has time to send us their 150-word proposals for papers, roundtables or poster presentations at conference@spma.org.uk. Presentations will be given in English, will last 15 minutes, and will be organised into thematic sessions.
You may propose your own topic or submit your paper to one of the following sessions:
- Swedish Empire: the archaeology of Stormaktstiden (organised by the PRG2026 group of Tallinn University’s archaeological research collection)
- Terror and resistance
- Dangerous cultural heritage: environmental threats from archaeological sites
- On the margins: East and West
- Cultural aspects of post-medieval mortuary archaeology (organised by Sanna Lipkin & Harold Mytum)
- Interrogating Russkiy Mir: The Heritage of the Russian Empire (organised by Anatolijs Venovcevs, Simon Radchenko & Monika Stobiecka)
We are also inviting participants to contribute a 5–10-minute statement to the roundtable “Archaeology is always political: the use and misuse of archaeology in politics, culture wars, and conflict”, followed by an open discussion.
The contribution could, for example:
- raise a problem or question;
- offer inspiring or instructive examples of situations in which the communication of archaeological research findings has gone well or badly;
- address unusual situations; or
- discuss the challenges of communicating sensitive topics.

Additional information: The conference fee (TBC) is lower for members of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology and for students—we encourage you to join! For SPMA members, the fee has been between £80 and £95, while for non-members it has been £120–£150. The student fee is approximately half of that. The fee includes the opening ceremony, coffee breaks and the academic programme; the excursions taking place on 14 May will incur a small additional charge.
