Abstract:

This seminar offers an introductory exploration of the interdisciplinary field of Health Humanities, with particular attention to its dialogue with Narrative Medicine and Graphic Medicine. It will begin by outlining the historical development and intellectual foundations of these disciplines, tracing their emergence as critical responses to the limitations of strictly biomedical models of illness.

Special emphasis will be placed on how these approaches reframe illness not merely as a clinical condition but as a lived, relational, and culturally mediated experience. The theoretical overview will be followed by a focused case study drawn from Graphic Medicine, examining how visual storytelling can represent complex experiences of illness and care. Through this example, the seminar will demonstrate how graphic narratives expand the expressive possibilities of medical humanities, offering alternative modes of empathy, interpretation, and knowledge production.
