This session of the School of Educational Sciences Research Club features Jodi Holschuh, a visiting researcher from Texas State University, who will give a presentation titled “Disciplinary Literacy in Language and Literature Education: An Analysis of Literary Text Interpretation Across Three Participant Groups.”

How do students collaboratively construct meaning when discussing a poem? The presentation will introduce the findings of a research project that explored collaborative interpretation of literary texts across three learning contexts: a ninth-grade English class, a university developmental literacy course, and a methods course for pre-service English teachers.
We will discuss how participants used processes of generating, connecting, and selecting ideas to develop their interpretations of literary texts. The presentation will also introduce practical strategies for making discussions in language and literature classrooms more meaningful and learner-centred.
