Talk Summary
“Individual Environmental Action in a Demanding Physical, Political and Social Context: Insights from Environmental Psychology”
In his talk, Prof Christian A. Klöckner will draw on the past 15 years of his research to explore the potential and boundaries of individual action in reducing environmental impacts. He will present an integrated model of pro-environmental behaviour that he has applied across several domains, a model of behaviour change processes, results from a large European intervention campaign aimed at reducing household energy use, and more recent approaches to stimulating pro-environmental behaviour in groups and governing change processes. Overall, the talk will reflect his perspective on the potential of environmental psychology research to address some of the pressing issues of our time, while also considering its limitations and the need for future research and theoretical development.
About the Speaker
Prof Dr Christian A. Klöckner is a professor in environmental psychology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He leads the research group for “Citizen, Environment, and Safety” researching individual, social and contextual drivers of environmental decisions (including food, energy, mobility, housing). His personal research interests include modelling environmentally relevant decisions and behaviour in the social and structural context, innovative environmental communication methods, societal disruption and transition, and psychological trade-offs in sustainability issues. He is engaged in many national and international research projects, coordinating several of them, among them the H2020 projects ECHOES, SMARTEES, and ENCHANT. He is the author of more than 200 academic papers.
