Talk Summary
“Lessons from the EU 1.5° Lifestyles Project: How Can Sustainable Lifestyle Choices Be Made Accessible, Affordable, Easy, and Fair?”
In her talk, Dr Kreinin will focus on key outcomes from the “EU 1.5° Lifestyles” project. In the most high-impact sectors of nutrition, mobility, housing, and leisure, individual lifestyle adjustments must be paired with systemic and structural reforms to allow citizens to live sustainably. Project outcomes show, that citizens would be ready to adopt “radical” demand-reduction choices if specific prerequisites were met, such as the universal availability of reliable, affordable alternative infrastructure. Individual willingness is therefore entirely constrained by existing provisioning systems. A major outcome of the project is also diagnosing and solving “responsibility ping-pong,” a systemic phenomenon where citizens expect governments to take action, governments blame “consumers” and businesses, businesses blame “consumers”, and citizens feel powerless, resulting in complete climate governance paralysis.
