MINT+K in Austria: Integrating the Arts into STEAM Education
On 13 - 14 March 2025, the Estonian team of SHAREE visited Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz to explore how Austria integrates the arts into STEAM education.

In Austria, STEM pedagogy is known as MINT, and with the inclusion of the arts, it becomes MINT+K (Kunst). At JKU, the arts are not just viewed as a vehicle for creativity, but as a foundational element of learning. Discussions with Prof. Zsolt Lavicza and his team emphasised a broad interpretation of art that includes visual arts, culture, communication, and community building
. This holistic approach highlights how the arts can strengthen interdisciplinary learning and contribute to more sustainable, inclusive education. JKU’s PhD programme in STEAM education is growing rapidly, attracting international researchers and strengthening cross-border collaboration. The university’s approach illustrates how interdisciplinary partnerships can expand STEAM education’s reach and impact.
This visit reinforced the idea that art in STEAM goes far beyond self-expression and the SHAREE team will continue to elaborate it further in research and curricula practice. Understanding and expanding these roles is central to advancing STEAM education across Europe.
