Erki Russow

I have been involved in archaeology since the late 1980s. Over the years, I have studied various topics, starting with pottery, then shifting towards the general aspects of urban archaeology in the Baltics and beyond. Besides graduating from the University of Tartu (MA 2001, PhD 2007), I have also attended or visited several universities abroad for varying lengths of time, such as Göttingen and the UCL Institute of Archaeology, and I have participated in or directed excavations in Lübeck and Dresden. Most recently, my focus has been on the diverse material culture of the medieval and later periods, encompassing personal devotion (such as pilgrimage, rosaries, and pipeclay devotional items) as well as crafts and trade as evidenced by archaeological finds. Currently, my work is linked to the study of consumption by examining late medieval and early modern massive find collections, such as cess pits and dumping sites in the northern Baltic.
