Tallinn University has been represented in the world university rankings since 2019, this proves the achievement of the goals set in the Tallinn University Development Plan, both in studies and research. Tallinn University is represented in two of the world´s most well-known rankings – the QS World University Rankings(QS WUR)  and Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR). The university is also valued in regional and area-specific rankings.

The basis for university rankings is data that the universities provide themselves. In addition, the number of research publications and references, financial data of the universities as well as international surveys are also taken into account. Different rankings assign different values to these indicators, thus the QS WUR focuses mostly on reputation. THE WUR however, focuses on studies and research. It is important to note that the rankings use indicators from different periods in time, which means that they are not comparable. Tallinn University is ranked 1001-1200 in both the QS WUR and THE WUR which means the University is among the top 5% of the world´s universities.
