On 10 February at 4:00 PM, the SOGOLAS RASI research seminar “Platform Work in Scotland: An Agenda for Fair Gig Work” will take place.
The seminar will be presented by Dr. Pedro Mendonça (Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University).
Short abstract
Drawing on the Fair Gig Work Scotland? project, I focus on the Scottish context to examine how national regulation and institutional conditioning (Fair Work Agenda) interact with platform business models to shape job quality. The talk explores how algorithmic management and platform logics prioritise speed and hyper-flexibility, contributing to the informalisation of labour markets and to growing health and safety risks across platform work. It also considers how platform workers themselves understand and navigate these conditions, and what kinds of regulatory and collective responses have been jointly developed to support fairer and more sustainable forms of platform work. This provides a comparative lens with current European Union initiatives, particularly the EU Platform Work Directive and national approaches such as Spain’s Ley Rider.
The seminar will be held in English. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Kairit Kall.
