MEDIT: Intuition, empathy and compassion: on “intensity” measuring with humans and AI systems

ntuition, tension, empathy and compassion are human concepts related to cognition, experience and capabilities. AI has become actual in education in Estonian Schools (AI Leap) [1] requiring inclusion of wellbeing and its research [2] [3]. These developments raise the question of how to “stay human” with AI systems [4] [5]. In this presentation aspects of cognitive and affective empathy/compassion and AI are discussed in the context of Kant’s early psychophysics of analytic idealism proposing that AI systems should be developed with “outer” and “inner” sense layers. Based on my doctoral dissertation (2025) [6] I introduce the theoretical background and possible empirical-technical settings derived from my definition of ‘Perceived structural musical tension’ (PSMT) and its reverse-version for AI systems to achieve a measurement and calibration tool to enhance empathy incorporation into AI systems (“intensity” measurement for emotion types, e.g. by iMotions). This presentation is a further development of my recent paper in a conference in Athens. [7] The educational dimension of this topic is related to TLU BFM MEDIT center Arts Didactics Research Group (ADRG) activities.

Gerhard Bruno Erich Lock (PhD in Musicology, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre EAMT) musicologist, composer, musician, educator, organizer, journal editor. Employed since 2005/2006 at Tallinn University (TLU), since 2015 at its Baltic Film, Media and Arts School (BFM) as a researcher and lecturer in musicology, multimedia and music education. Research fields: learning/teaching strategies, creativity/improvisation/serendipity, musical tension, cognitive analysis, music and visualization, scientific modeling, history of music, academic Estonian, interdisciplinary topics. Since 2005 co-organizer of festivals and international research seminars of the Estonian Arnold Schoenberg Society. Since 2009 co-founder, co-organizer and editor of the CFMAE conference series and its Journal (editor-in-chief since 2021). Since 2024  co-leader of the Arts Didactics Research Group at BFM MEDIT center. Participated in EAS DigiTiME, ELIA artistic research and the International Serendipity Society activities.
