7 questions for cum laude alumnus Mattias Mesilane
Mattias Mesilane graduated this year with a Master’s degree in Communication Management, cum laude. At the graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 19, he delivered a speech on behalf of the alumni. On June 26, Mattias was supposed to attend the Estonian President’s reception for outstanding graduates, but due to flight cancellations, he will not make it to Estonia. Therefore, we conducted a written interview with him.

Specialty and year of graduation. What sparked your interest in Communication Management?
I studied in the master’s programme in Communication Management from 2023 to 2025. I wanted to better understand how communication affects us and learn how to use it more consciously, both in professional settings and everyday life. There are many people in the world, and each of us is a little different. Our customs, values, and ways of communicating influence how we understand one another. I am interested in how communication works and how to shape it meaningfully to help us all understand each other better.
What is your current role, and what does it entail?
I currently work at one of Estonia’s leading outdoor media companies. I am responsible for coordinating cooperation between various parties to ensure that marketing messages are effectively planned and achieve their intended impact. I believe my work is connected to communication on every level, from interacting with clients and partners to delivering campaign messages clearly and purposefully to the client’s target audience.

Now that my studies have come to an end, I am taking some time to rest, travel, and let the knowledge accumulated over the past couple of years settle. I feel this is a good moment to look around with a broader perspective, gather fresh ideas, and reflect on what the next direction might be and where I would like to go from here. I do not have any concrete academic or professional plans in place yet, but I feel open to new challenges if the right opportunity comes along. There are several interesting directions and ideas to consider, but I would like to take the next steps calmly and thoughtfully.
Which professional achievement or initiative are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the moments when I have achieved a goal I set for myself, even under difficult circumstances. It is exactly those moments when thoughtful decisions and dedicated effort come to fruition that inspire me the most. I feel that when I have thoroughly thought something through, created a solid plan, and worked persistently towards it, reaching the result and experiencing that sense of accomplishment is far more meaningful to me than any random or easy success.
What is something about you that would surprise people to know?
I enjoy going fishing, but I do not eat seafood.
A knowledge/lesson that I picked up at BFM and keep in mind on a daily basis:
One important lesson I took away from BFM and keep in mind every day is that any big problem can be broken down into smaller parts. When something feels too complicated, it is important not to give up. Instead, take the time to think about how to solve the situation step by step.
One piece of advice for future and current BFM Communication Management MA students:
There are no stupid questions. Do not make assumptions. Ask questions confidently and you will get your answers.
