My first year studying Audiovisual Media

I am Milla-Maria Kujala, but everyone calls me Millis. I am 22-year-old Finnish girl from a small town called Veikkola. I found BFM by accident, at least almost. I lived in Florida for five years while playing soccer and going to school. I finished school there. When Covid hit, I started to look for universities in Finland. I didn't find a good fit so I expanded to Europe. Then I saw BFM, I applied, got in and came here. One of the best desicions ever made, after getting a cat..

I am a Audiovisual Media student, which means that I study filmmaking. I am a technical student so I deal with camera, lights and sometimes sound too. My first impression of BFM was that there were a lot of international students and even Finnish people there. My first year was crazy, but in a good way. I have gotten a lot of friends at the school and outside the school. I learned very fast what to do in film school to survive and that proactivity will take me where ever I want to go.

Most memorable thing of my first year was definitely me and my director going to Finland carrying the equipment meant for 5 people. We didn't have a car and we looked like equipment Christmas trees, while our other classmates were having a Halloween party. I still remind them of that day. I got to be the DoP, sound and gaffer for that trailer.

I like BFM because the Audiovisual Media people are like a small family. We have great teachers and we are trusted to work on our own. Furthermore, we are also allowed to be just the way we are. Estonia is nice and Tallinn is a cute small city. I love the free public transportation!

Definitely come and study, you will love it! The only thing that you need to be prepared for, is that you will be beyond confused because nobody in the school knows schedules, dates nor times for anything. But it’s fine, because usually we figure everything out. To be honest, it’s just like working in the film industry. It’s messy and it’s hard but you'll manage when you are determined enough to do so.
