Tallinn University to Host the Nordic Conference on Mathematics Education NORMA 2027

Tallinn University will host the 11th Nordic Conference on Mathematics Education, NORMA 2027, on 8–11 June 2027. The conference will bring together mathematics education researchers, teacher educators, doctoral students and others interested in the field to discuss current issues in mathematics education.

The conference's key theme, “(No) Tradeoffs Between Human and Machine Intelligence in Mathematics Education,” will explore how artificial intelligence is changing the ways we engage with mathematics, as well as how mathematics is learned and taught.

According to Jüri Kurvits, Senior Lecturer of Mathematics Didactics at Tallinn University and conference chair, hosting the international conference is a great honour: “The development of artificial intelligence raises new questions in mathematics education that go far beyond the use of technology. What does it mean to know and understand mathematics today, when AI is becoming increasingly capable of solving mathematical problems? This makes a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and relationships, as well as the ability to reason, justify conclusions and critically evaluate results, all the more important. NORMA 2027 will bring together researchers and teachers from across the Nordic and Baltic countries to discuss these questions.”

One of the keynote speakers will be Matti Tedre, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Eastern Finland. His keynote, “Shifting from Rule-Based to Data-Driven Computing Changes What Learners Need to Understand and How We Teach It,” will explore what it means for learners to design and build machine learning systems whose behaviour is shaped by data and training rather than predefined rules. Drawing on a multi-year research project on AI education, Tedre will examine the ways of thinking and knowledge required by this shift and its implications for learning and teaching in schools and teacher education.

The NORMA conferences are organised in collaboration with NoRME, the Nordic Society for Research in Mathematics Education. They provide a forum for discussion and constructive interaction among researchers, teachers, teacher educators and other members of the education community.

The conference programme will include a Doctoral Consortium, keynote presentations, parallel sessions and workshops. The programme will also feature a reception at Tallinn University, a conference dinner and a special session in Estonian for Estonian teachers. Further programme details will be published on the conference website.

The submission system opens on 1 November 2026. The deadline for regular paper submissions is 7 December 2026, while posters, short communications, working groups and symposia must be submitted by 15 January 2027.

The conference is organised by Tallinn University in cooperation with the international programme and organising committees.
