At the Education Research Club, Tobias Ley, Professor of Learning Analytics and Educational Innovation at Tallinn University, will introduce the work of the Learning and Intelligent Technology Research Group and share experiences in promoting responsible, meaningful and sustainable research.
Bringing together researchers from the School of Digital Technologies and the School of Educational Sciences, the research group has evolved over 15 years from the activities of the Centre for Educational Technology. With approximately 14 researchers, the group aims to conduct impactful research while fostering an inclusive and sustainable research environment.
The group's research focuses on the use of intelligent technologies in professional settings and the learning processes associated with them. Particular attention is given to the impact of artificial intelligence on teachers' professional practice. The Horizon Europe project TAICo explores how AI is transforming teachers' work, while a new grant from the Estonian Research Council supports research into the development of teachers' professional agency in technology-rich classrooms.
In his presentation, Tobias Ley will also discuss how to foster a research culture that values thorough and reflective inquiry. The principles of slow science recognise that learning and changes in professional practice take time. Research should therefore prioritise long-term impact over short-term success, meaningful contributions over quantitative performance indicators, and collaboration over competition.
About the speaker: Tobias Ley is Professor of Learning Analytics and Educational Innovation at Tallinn University. His research focuses on the use of digital technologies in professional learning. He has led several European research projects, including Learning Layers and TAICo, and contributed to the development of Tallinn University's Centre of Excellence in Educational Innovation.
