One-Minute Lecture: What is Number Sense?

57 minus 19. How much is that? In your head? Right here and now? Annika Volt, Didactic of Mathematics at Tallinn University, what does this moment reveal about us?

Number sense is the ability to understand the relationships between numbers and to estimate results. A person with good number sense does not rely solely on rules and algorithms but thinks flexibly. For instance, to find the result of 57 - 19, one might first subtract 20 and then add the extra one back to the result.

The OECD considers number sense one of the core skills adults need to manage their daily lives. As adults, we apply these skills when comparing loan and salary offers, understanding medication dosages, and reading data critically. Therefore, it is worth reminding young people that participating in mathematical discussions is not merely preparation for the next test, but rather for a future where they can navigate the world of numbers wisely and consciously.
