One-Minute Lecture: Why is it worth taking leisure time seriously?

Free time is a great opportunity to relax, read a book, or simply sleep in. However, it is often effort or challenging oneself that gives free time special value. Karel Kulbin, Lecturer in Recreation Management at Tallinn University, explains why leisure time is worth taking seriously.

Have you noticed that after a tiring workday, the best leisure time isn't always just resting? Often, the best way to recharge is actually an activity that demands new effort from us.

Sociologist Robert Stebbins introduced the concept of "serious leisure" to describe this phenomenon. It refers to an activity to which we return time and again, in which we want to improve, and for which we are willing to exert effort—whether it be choral singing, marathon running, painting, or gardening.

Serious leisure is characterized by commitment and a desire to get better at it. As we progress, we experience mastery, shared activity fosters a sense of togetherness, and a meaningful hobby provides self-fulfillment.

Therefore, leisure time does not have to mean just resting. It is often particularly valuable to us precisely when we strive for something we have chosen for ourselves.
