ESTONIAN MOVIE: The Riddle of Jaan Niemand

"The Riddle of Jaan Niemand" (dir. Kaur Kokk, 2018) fits perfectly into the dark and slightly grim November, taking us to the post-Great Northern War period, a time when the population has been oppressed for years by war, famine, and plague.

The protagonist of this mysterious thriller is Jaan (Meelis Rämmeld), who is found unconscious on the seashore. Jaan has no memory of his past. He is a stranger both to himself and to the people around him. By chance, Jaan starts living with a local baron (Andres Lepik) in a manor house, where a gruesome crime took place some time ago. Over time, clues begin to emerge about the mysterious stranger’s background and past actions. What to do when it turns out that you are someone you don’t want to be?
