7 Days in 2025 I Will Never Forget
It is the last day of the calendar year 2025, so it’s a good time to reflect on what the year has given and taken away. Among the most beautiful things it brought me are the seven days I spent at TLU in Tallinn. Until then, I had never been to Estonia and I hadn’t even planned to visit.
When the opportunity arose to go on a staff mobility placement within the Erasmus+ programme, a colleague recommended Tallinn, as he had already been there for work. I remembered the photos and enthusiastic stories from a relative of mine who had studied at the university there years ago.
When another colleague heard that I was heading to TLU in Tallinn, she said excitedly, “Maris Peters is amazing!” And she really was. If it hadn’t been for her, I probably wouldn’t have managed all the technicalities and, in the end, I wouldn’t have gone anywhere…
I browse through my photos, walk through my memories, and piece together the fragments into a colourful mosaic made up of my experiences. Here it is:
Day One: A cozy dormitory just steps from Tallinn University

My first impression of Tallinn started with the accommodation—a cozy dormitory located just a few steps from Tallinn University (TLU). It was comfortable, convenient, and had a welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect base for my week-long stay. The proximity to the university meant I could easily walk to meetings without worrying about transportation.
Staying in such a friendly and well-located dormitory immediately set the tone for a positive and productive experience at TLU.
Day Two: The TLU building called Silva

One of TLU buildings is called Silva. Nomen omen – I knew immediately that I was in the right place!
Day three: The library and study room-sanctuary of learning

The library and study room – I wasn’t going to leave this place anytime soon!
I discovered the true heart of TLU – the library and study room. From the moment I stepped in, I knew I wasn’t going to leave anytime soon. The quiet, focused atmosphere combined with the wealth of resources made it the perfect place to dive into research, reading, and reflection.
I spent hours exploring the books and cozy study corners. It quickly became my favorite spot on campus, a place where I could concentrate, think and work, and truly feel part of the university environment. The library wasn’t just a room filled with books – it was a hub of knowledge, inspiration, and motivation.
Day four: even eating is important!

One of my favorite spots quickly became the university café, a place that nourished both body and soul. It wasn’t just about the food; the warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and cozy corners made it a perfect place to relax, recharge, and even strike up conversations with my colleagues.
Day five: massage – an unexpected bonus in the University lobby

Day Five brought a delightful surprise: a massage in the university lobby! Amidst the busy schedule of meetings and exploring Tallinn, this unexpected treat was a perfect way to relax and recharge.
The lobby, usually bustling with students and staff, suddenly became a little oasis of calm. The gentle music, the soothing environment, and the unexpected opportunity to unwind made it feel like a special gift from the university. It was a reminder that taking care of yourself is just as important as your academic and professional activities.
Day six: time to collect souvenirs

On the sixth day, it was time to collect souvenirs—little reminders of my unforgettable week in Tallinn. Walking through local shops and markets, I carefully chose items that would help me remember the sights, smells, and experiences of the city.
At the university shop, choosing the perfect souvenir was never a problem. Each item reflected the spirit of Tallinn and the university, making it easy to find something meaningful.
Each souvenir carried a story: a tiny keepsake from the university, a handcrafted item from the Old Town, or a postcard capturing the beauty of Tallinn’s skyline. Collecting these mementos was more than just shopping; it was a way to preserve memories and reflect on everything I had experienced so far.
Day seven: it´s time to say goodbye…

On the seventh and final day, it was time to say goodbye. After a week full of new experiences, discoveries, and unforgettable moments at TLU and in Tallinn, it was bittersweet to leave.
Daily meetings with Estonian colleagues took place in all the TLU buildings, giving me the opportunity to connect with staff across different departments, learn from their expertise, and gain a deeper understanding of university life. These interactions added so much value to my experience and made saying goodbye even harder.
I spent the day revisiting some of my favorite spots, taking a last walk through the charming streets, and reflecting on everything I had learned and experienced. Meeting new friends, exploring the city, local lifestyle (including sauna) and immersing myself in university life had made this week truly special.
Saying goodbye was not just about leaving a place—it was about cherishing the memories, the people I met, and the lessons I took with me. With a heart full of gratitude and a mind buzzing with inspiration, I knew this week would stay with me forever.
In my heart, I borrow the words of a Czech poet:
“…For the well-being of my brothers and my friends,
I will always say: Peace be within you!”
See you at Charles University in Prague, dear colleagues!
Yours,
Silvie Chytrá Dratvová
