The speaker of this "Inimkond" seminar is Dr Maroš Krivy from Estonian Art Academy, who will be talking at 6 p.m. in room A303 about "Humanize! Housing estates, panel buildings and the promise of colour. The case of Czechoslovakia between the late 1970s and today."

Abstract:
I will discuss architectural discourse and practice of humanizing panel buildings, focusing on Czechoslovakia between the late 1970s and today. The humanization debate has been set against the discourse of the grey and it has had a colourful environment as its tool. It has spanned the periods of socialism and post-socialism. What changed in the early 1990s was not the desire for colour, but the actors who applied it to panel buildings. Since around 2008 we can identify a new architectural discourse of the garish, critical of the vernacular use of colour on panel buildings, but silent about the transformed property rights that has determined vernacular facades.
