Lecture title: “Cultural and language heritage in multilingual families”

Abstract: In today’s World, family multilingualism is a highly common phenomenon, behind which migratory processes are the main factor. However, not all families strive to maintain the confluent languages and cultures, and frequently the second-generation speakers become actually monolingual and monocultural. This lecture discusses the main sociolinguistic and cognitive factors, which predict the degree of language and culture maintenance in multilingual families. It focuses on affective, social and behavioral aspects of language and culture maintenance and loss, and aims at providing students with a global perspective on language policy in multilingual families.
