Seventy researchers from Europe, America, Asia and Australia will discuss
contemporary youth subcultures and their impact on societies at a
conference being held at Tallinn University from February 2–4. The
conference, titled "Youth (Sub)cultures in Changing Societies" is organized
by the Centre for Lifestyles Studies at the Institute for International and
Social Studies, Tallinn University.Hilary Pilkington from the University of
Warwick (UK) will open the conference with her presentation on skinheads in
Russia. Her presentation is based on a seven-year ethnographic research
project in Vorkuta which analyses the meaning of being a skinhead, in the
context of ideology, style and violence. Andy Bennett from Griffith
University (Australia) will discuss youth cultures and ageing, because pop
music is no longer the only means of self-expression for teenagers but also
for the middle-aged. Ross Haenfler (USA) will explore the connections
between deviance, resistance, and social change; Patrick Williams
(Singapore) will analyse the impact of subcultures, Paul Hodkinson (UK)
will discuss the meaning and importance of style and Mikko Salasuo
(Finland) will discuss      new possibilities for
