“Can machines think?” This was the question Alan Turing asked himself in 1950. Today, our machines do a lot of thinking for us. Recommendation software such as Google Maps suggests which route we should take. Spotify gives us songs to listen to. Netflix tells us what to watch next.
Recommendation software is also used by driverless cars, police departments, banks and government institutions. So, another question is, “who bears the responsibility when recommendation software goes awry?” In my talk, I want to address some of the changes we are experiencing as a civilization in the midst of the digital revolution, and ask some questions about what role we want this new technology to play in our lives.
