On Thursday, 5 November at 6:00pm TÜHI Associate Professor of Chinese Studies Alessandro Rippa is presenting his new book "Borderland Infrastructures: Trade, Development, and Control in Western China" in room M-648.

Based on long-term ethnographic research the monograph addresses the contradiction between large-scale investments to infrastructure across Chinese borderlands and small-scale traders who have lost their historic strategic advantages under the growth of massive Chinese state investment. Concurrently, local ethnic minorities have become the target of radical resettlement projects, securitization, and tourism initiatives, and have in many cases grown increasingly dependent on state subsidies. The book offers new analytical tools to understand how state power is experienced, mediated, and enacted in Xinjiang and Yunnan.
