This workshop is organized as part of the ETAG-supported project PRG319, "Around the World and Back Again: A Global Typology of the Reception of Estonian Semiotics," in collaboration with the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. The project aims to investigate how Estonian semiotics, its predecessors and cognate movements are perceived and applied in various cultural contexts. In particular, one of the focuses of Session II is the theoretical legacy of Ukrainian Formalism. Internationally recognized scholars from the U.K., U.S., Czech Republic and Estonia will present their papers and participate in discussions.

The keynote speaker for this session is Professor Galin Tihanov, a George Steiner Professor of Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London. Professor Tihanov's research encompasses a wide range of interests in comparative literature and intellectual history, focusing on the cultural and intellectual developments in Russian, German, Central- and East-European regions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. His most recent publication, The Birth and Death of Literary Theory: Regimes of Relevance in Russia and Beyond (Stanford University Press, 2019), earned the prestigious 2020 AATSEEL Prize for the Best Book in Literary Studies. The quantity and quality of Professor Tihanov's work has been honored by election to the British Academy and to Academia Europaea.
